What this tool computes
Two birth stars go in, with their padas, and the eight kootas of Ashtakoota come back: varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoot and nadi, adding to thirty-six. It also does the part few calculators offer, which is to place that total against every other total — all 11,664 possible pairings of birth star and pada, scored the same way, so you can see where yours falls among them. No birth time is needed, because each of the eight is decided by the Moon’s nakshatra and the sign that nakshatra falls in.
The part usually left unsaid
The scale. A total arrives with no indication of whether it is unusual, and without that a reader cannot tell a poor result from an ordinary one. The mean across all pairings is 20.1 out of thirty-six and the median is 20.5. 66.7% of pairings reach eighteen; only 6.9% reach twenty-eight. A score in the low twenties is not a near miss. It is the middle of the distribution.
The same applies koota by koota. Nadi carries 8 points on its own and scores zero in 33.3% of pairings, so one koota decides a great deal of the spread. Varna, at the other end, is awarded in full in 62.5% of pairings, which means it separates almost nobody from anybody. The breakdown shows which koota actually moved your total and how common that outcome is.
What the total means, and what it does not
A guna total is what one scoring system concludes about two birth stars. It is not a prediction, and this site will not turn it into one. It is also not the whole of matching: with no birth time there is no ascendant and no planetary positions, so there is no mangal dosha check and no dasha here. Those need both full birth details, and the full kundli milan tool. A number drawn from stars alone cannot carry what it never had.
Is my score good?
Compare it with the distribution the tool prints beside it, which is the honest way to read it. Eighteen out of thirty-six is a widely used convention rather than a result of any computation, and a majority of all possible pairings clear it. Where a total sits relative to the mean tells you more than whether it crossed a line somebody chose.
Why does another calculator give me a different total?
Usually the tables. Sources differ on which rashi belongs to which varna and which vashya group, and they differ on the direction tara is counted in. Those choices are worth one, two and three points, and they compound. This tool states which school it is running for each score it prints.
Why does it ask for the pada?
Because four of the eight kootas are computed from the Moon sign rather than the star, and several nakshatras straddle two signs. Which pada the Moon occupied decides which sign it was in, and so decides varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot. Entering the star without the pada leaves those four to a guess.
