22 out of 36

What this score means against every possible nakshatra-pada pairing, and which kootas most often fall short here.

42.5% reach 22 or better

22 is above the average score of 20.1.

Measured over every one of the 11,664 possible nakshatra-pada pairings — the whole population, not a sample. 4.1% of them land exactly here.

A total of 22 out of 36 sits above the ordinary pairing. Measured across all 11664 possible pairings of nakshatra and pada, the mean total is 20.1, and 42.5% of pairings reach 22 or better. If this was handed to you as a good score, the arithmetic agrees with the description.

Exactly 4.1% of pairings land on this total — 479 of them. So the number is comfortable rather than rare. The question worth asking at this height is not whether the total clears a line. It is which of the eight tests gave up the remaining points, because at 22 that answer has changed.

What is missing at this total

Every total short of 36 is a total with something absent. Counting only the pairings that score exactly 22, these are the kootas that most often come back at zero:

The head of that list is Vashya, and it is worth knowing what it actually compares. Vashya sorts the twelve rashis into classes the older texts describe in terms of natural order — four-footed signs, human signs, water-dwelling signs, a wild-natured sign and an insect sign — and then asks which class each partner’s sign falls into. Points are awarded when the pair falls into a combination the table treats as sympathetic and withheld when it does not. It is one of the smallest tests on the 36-point scale, and it is assessed from the rashi alone.

Higher up the range, the points that go missing are usually the small ones.

What is already intact

The counterpart list is the one that explains the total. These kootas most often score full marks at 22:

Nadi is the heaviest single test on the scale and, in the common convention, it pays everything or nothing. At 22 it is intact in 87.3% of pairings and at zero in the rest — which is why it can appear on both lists on this page. Whether it is intact in your chart is a fact about your chart, not about this total.

These are exhaustive counts rather than estimates. There are exactly 108 nakshatra-pada positions, so every ordered pairing that can exist was scored. A second run returns the same figures.

What is worth checking anyway

Which tradition produced the total. Several kootas are scored by more than one documented convention — which table is used for graha maitri, the direction the tara count is taken in, which varna table a source prints. Each convention traces to a named lineage, and and a bare total does not record which one was used. If a particular koota is what the family is dwelling on, asking for the tradition by name is a fair question rather than a challenge.

The recorded birth time. Everything above is computed from the moon’s nakshatra and pada. A pada is a quarter of a nakshatra, so a time written down to the nearest half hour can put the moon in the neighbouring pada and move several kootas at once. Checking the time against the hospital record or the family note costs nothing and settles the foundation the whole total rests on.

The breakdown rather than the number. Two charts reaching 22 by different routes are different charts, and the koota-by-koota comparison is what shows which one you are holding. If you want that laid out for your own pairing alongside what each named tradition concludes about it, the full comparison is the next thing to read.

What most often falls short at 22

Among the 479 pairings that land on this score, how often each koota scored nothing at all.

This is the arithmetic. It is the same for everyone.
