What this tool computes
Varna in Guna Milan is a class assigned to a rashi — the sign the Moon occupied at birth. Twelve signs, four varnas, three signs to each, and in the majority map the grouping follows the elements exactly: water signs take one varna, fire another, earth a third, air the fourth. It is not the family or the community either party was born into. The four are ranked, and the standard rule asks that the groom’s varna equal or exceed the bride’s. The tool takes both moon signs, prints both varnas, and awards the 1 point the koota is worth, or does not.
The two things left unsaid
The first is that varna is the only koota in the eight that is not symmetric. Swap bride and groom and the same pairing can score differently, which no other koota does. The second is that a second rule exists. Two of the traditions we compare require the groom’s varna to be strictly higher, so an equal-varna pairing — the commonest kind there is — scores nothing. A calculator that does not say which of the two rules it applied has not told you what its varna line means.
Whether equal varna passes or fails is a live disagreement between traditions, and it decides the outcome for the largest group of couples.
What the result does and does not mean
It means one point out of thirty-six moved, or did not. Across all 11,664 ordered nakshatra-pada pairings — the whole population, not a sample — 62.5% take the point. Roughly three in five pass and the rest do not, which makes a varna failure common enough to be unremarkable rather than a rare adverse finding. Set against a mean total of 20.1 out of thirty-six, losing varna cannot move a score across the conventional pass mark unless the score was already sitting exactly on it. The result says nothing about either person and forecasts nothing.
Does varna mean caste?
Not in this calculation. The label is attached to a moon sign and to nothing else. Two people from the same household born four months apart will usually hold different varnas, which is the clearest demonstration available that the test is reading a sign rather than a lineage.
We were told the match fails on varna. How much weight does that carry?
Arithmetically, one point. What an astrologer concludes from that point is their judgement to explain, and worth asking about directly — particularly if the rest of the reading was favourable and varna is the finding being leaned on.
Which varna table does this use?
The element-grouped majority map. One widely reproduced printed source gives a table in which the element grouping collapses — an air sign among the fire-sign varna, a fire sign among the earth one. The reference document governing our tables judges that a typesetting corruption rather than a doctrinal difference, so we follow the majority map even when running that author’s preset, and the override is recorded with the field, the value used instead and the reason.
